Root canal therapy may be necessary after severe trauma or when decay has reached into the nerve of the tooth. It involves 3 stages that are carried out in 3 separate visits. The first appointment aims to remove the nerve from the tooth and place antibiotics to reduce infection and pain. The second stage requires special instruments to thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth and allow for the placement of a root filling in the final appointment to prevent bacteria from regrowing.
